Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Governor Jim Hunt

North Carolina Mourns Its Longest-Serving Governor

RALEIGH, N.C. — The state of North Carolina is mourning the passing of Governor James Baxter “Jim” Hunt Jr., who died on December 18, 2025, at the age of 88. As the longest-serving governor in North Carolina history, Hunt’s remarkable 16 years in office transformed the Tar Heel State through visionary leadership in education, economic development, and public service.

“Governor Hunt devoted his life to serving the people of North Carolina, guided by a belief that public service should expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and always put people first,” said his daughter, Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt, in announcing his passing.

Hunt’s legacy includes initiatives such as the Smart Start early childhood education program, advancing all-day kindergarten, raising teacher pay, and establishing the NC Biotechnology Center, efforts that reshaped the state’s educational and economic landscape. Because of these advances he helped establish for NC public schools, Hunt became fondly known as the “Education Governor!”

His leadership extended well beyond his gubernatorial terms as he remained an advocate for public education and civic engagement throughout his life particularly for state leaders today.

Honoring His Legacy: Brenda Pollard’s Tribute

Brenda Pollard, President of the North Carolina Senior Democrats, has shared heartfelt reflections on Governor Hunt’s profound impact — both personally and for generations of North Carolinians. Pollard first met Governor Hunt early in her career while working for the Secretary of State and quickly formed a lifelong respect for his integrity and commitment to public service.

“Gov. Hunt was an icon and a legend whose work helped shape who I am today,” Pollard said. “We both grew up on farms and learned the value of hard work, community, and giving back. His belief in including everyone at the table — regardless of background — taught me what leadership truly means.”

Pollard recalls being appointed by Hunt to serve on the North Carolina Banking Commission and cherishes memorabilia from their years of friendship, including a holiday card signed by Jim and Carolyn Hunt — tokens of his kindness and personal warmth.

“As President of the Senior Democrats, I see his influence every day,” Pollard continued. “He guided my decisions, inspired my advocacy, and showed that public service is about improving lives. We honor his legacy by continuing the work he believed in — strengthening education, expanding opportunity, and serving our communities with compassion.”

State and Public Remembrance

In honor of Governor Hunt’s lifelong contributions, flags across North Carolina have been ordered to remain at half-staff through his funeral services. A public funeral will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Wilson on December 26, and a book of condolences is available for the public to sign at the State Capitol.

Governor Hunt’s legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched — from students and teachers to public servants and community leaders — and through the leaders he inspired, such as Brenda Pollard, whose work continues to uphold his values of service, inclusion, and integrity.
